Red Table Reverie
White River National Forest, Colorado
Soft morning light spills westward over the distant Gore Range and Eagle River valley onto the forested slopes of Red Table Mountain. Rising nearly a mile from Gambel oak shrublands through pinyon-juniper and sagebrush, past glacial cirques studded with alpine lakes and culminating at an eighteen-mile long ridge of sandstone, this diverse range of ecosystems provides habitat for everything from bighorn sheep to lynx and peregrine falcon. Nearly 50,000 acres of the Red Table Mountain area have been recommended for wilderness designation by the U.S. Forest Service, the largest such area in Colorado. Yet several legislative attempts later, the area still lacks permanent protections.
