Surface Hoar
Eagle’s Nest Wilderness, Colorado
At the edge of Lower Cataract Lake in the Eagle’s Nest Wilderness, the blue sky dramatically lends its color to the shaded ice. A sunlit hill of scrub oak reflects as red highlights in the melt-freeze line. Moisture in the air has condensed during a cold, clear night as feathery surface hoar. Close inspection also reveals grasses faintly visible beneath the ice.
