Moss blankets red firs deep in the montane forest of Sequoia National Park. Near the Kern River Valley, this stand is accessed from the High Sierra Trail, several days from the nearest road.
Since this image was captured, these forests, along with those around the world, have suffered the combined impacts of climate change. Pine beetle, wildfires, fungal diseases, hotter temperatures and more severe droughts have resulted in tree mortality here in Sequoia National Park more than doubling.
