Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia

A cluster of maple leaves catches morning light among shifting fog in West Virginia’s Monongahela National Forest. The fog seen here is the result of moisture condensing as the prevailing westerly winds are forced up into the cooler atmosphere over the Appalachian Mountains. This mechanism causes widely varying patterns of precipitation throughout the area, in turn contributing to some of the greatest ecological diversity in the United States.
