Uncompahgre National Forest, Colorado

Layers of autumn color unfold in Colorado’s San Juan mountain range. The stark difference in ecosystems and microclimates between the higher and lower elevations, and even between the north and south facing slopes, is plainly evident. Here, the northern slopes support dense stands of aspen and conifers while the drier southern aspect hold scrub oak almost exclusively.
